About the research platform FINO3

In January 2002, the Federal Government decided that three research platforms in the North and Baltic Seas (FINO) will be set up in three potential suitable areas in the immediate vicinity of planned and requested larger offshore wind farms. FINO3 was designed, planned, constructed, constructed and finally built in 2009 by the FuE-Zentrum FH Kiel GmbH. Platform operation has been ongoing since August 2009.

Objective

The measurement data collected at FINO3 will provide indispensable results for the optimization of offshore wind farms and their technology.

Position

When installing the platform, FINO3 was solitary standing far out at sea. In the meantime, FINO3 is hardly noticeable when approaching, as hundreds of wind turbines around the platform have started to work.

Equipment

Here you will find all the information and the most important technical data for power supply, communication and equipment.

Design

The first draft, planning, design, construction and installation of the platform took place in the first phase of the project between the years 2006 and 2009.

Chronicle

At the end of 2005, the Competence Center "Offshore Wind Energy - North Sea development platform for technology transfer and nature conservation" was established. Meanwhile, the successful operation is in the fourth phase of project funding through federal and state funds.
